"The History of Project Management – What can we learn from the ancient Project Managers?"

The Pyramid of Giza, the Parthenon, and the Colosseum are all great historical projects from the past 4 millennia. When we look back we tend to look at these as great architectural or engineering works. Project management tends to be overlooked, and yet the core principles were used extensively in these projects.

This presentation takes a hard look at the history of project management, how it evolved, and presents some quite remarkable results. Namely, that project management did not just appear in the last 100 years but has been a steady evolution for at least 4,500 years.

New insights emerge when dissecting historical projects through a project management lens, and Mark Kozak-Holland brings this to life in his analysis. You will walk away with new insights and an interest to further look at these projects more closely for lessons that are applicable today as when the project was initiated.

Paying attention to how historical projects and emerging technologies of the past solved complex problems of the day provides some very valuable insights into how to solve today’s more challenging business problems.

Learning Objectives – Purpose/Benefit

The presentation highlights the important lessons from the history of project management to a business audience. It shows:

  • How ancient projects managed a budget, materials (equipment), and a project workforce.
  • How ancient projects created deliverables within a specific time frame, to a predefined scope, and level of quality.
  • How the PMBOK Knowledge Areas came into play with the project initiation, planning, control, execution, and closeout.

It creates a historical project baseline for comparative purposes to today’s projects and brings a wealth of lessons. Entertaining and full of intriguing historical details, the presentation highlights the evolution of project management.
