Excellent communication is essential to effective project management. Here are 7 communication skills that will help you become more effective and more successful:
- Know your audience. Before writing a word, opening your mouth or touching the keyboard, ask, “who am I talking to?” Look at culture, position, history, appropriateness, etc.
- Know your content. What are you saying? Think it through. Write down what you want to say. Write and review your emails before putting an addressee in.
- C3: Be Clear, be concise, be complete in your communication. Keep it simple.
- Think Proactively. Manage expectations. The “why” is always important.
- Be genuine. Be honest. If you can’t state the truth, say nothing.
- Control the communication , don’t let it control you. Choose the appropriate channel(s) in which to communicate. Empower others.
- Listen , and when you’re done, listen some more.
I will take you through the 7 skills. I will illustrate how the skills work and give you context for the skills and techniques of how to use them.
Remember: The only computer in the world that can manage a project is between your ears.
